I just wanted to post this blog, as I had written it a while ago and just realized that I never did put it up...

So during my Anatomy and Physiology class that I took a year ago.. I realized one thing.. I love dead people... Well not the fact that they are dead, but there comes such a true appreciation for the human body... after you have "dissected" one.

Yes.. you read that right.. during my undergraduate education I had a professor that was so awesome.. that she took us to the morgue!!!! That is ofcourse only those of us that got A's on our mid-terms (Go Me!)

There is nothing like getting off an elevator and being inside a room with 27 dead people. Erie to most.... facinating to me! I have a stomach for that kind of stuff... blood, guts, gore.. I love it!  nothing makes me grossed out.. well except for swamp ass on a certain individual.. that I can live without.

There are many things that I learned that day... some of which I am sure none of you know.. Like did you know that cadavers that the schools on the east coast use for study.. are actually people who lived on the west cost.. and visa versa... I guess they do this in hopes that there is less of a chance for recognition. Medical cadavers are wonderful, generous people who donate their bodies to science.. and in return get about $5000 and a tattoo on their foot. The tattoo is a number and any Medical examiner will see it  when they die and know what to do with their body. The whole program of medical cadavers is acutally quite interesting. Schools and students treat these cadavers with the utmost respect. At the end of the semester they creamate wll the bodies and have a mass ceremony where all the students, professors and family members of the deceast get together. These ceremonies are filled with stories from the students about how their bodies helped them learn, family members will talk about them..etc.... it is actually quite a beautiful thing. My teacher was telling us that it was such a wonderful experience that she was glad to have taken part in it.

Besides all that stuff, I really got to do some awesome things while I was there. There was nothing like seeing  and handle the insides of a woman about my height and my weight.. and getting to see what I actually look like inside. There was a man who's liver was probably about the size of a football.. he died from liver cancer.... There was a lady that was totally bisceted and her legs exposed all the muslces and veins and stuff.. oh it was so awesome to see. I had my hands inside these bodies.. I held their organs.. It was purely amazing.....

After my visit to the morgue.. I read this book STIFF By Mary Roach.. it was one of the most interesting pieces of literature that I ever read. She is so intelligent and hysterical.. yet respectful.. she  writes about all her experiences and share her information. My favorite chapter was when she discusses the "body farm" (a place in Tennessee.. used by researchers to understand the way human bodies decay... the biological and chemical phases, how long they last, and what happens... in order to help solve mysterious deaths)

Some of the interesting things she talks about in that chapter are the stages of decay and what happens to your body. Such as the first stage, "self-digestion", as your body liquifies itself you can slough off your skin entirely... nasty right? hold on it gets better... Bacteria then desides to help the body by breaking down some of the compounds in your body.. they produce gas.. and you get filled with it.. known as "bloat". Oh I cant describe it half as good as she does... so just read the book.

Did you know that if body has drown in a lake.. the police can use "human remain stiffing" dogs above the water.. say in a boat... to identify where the body is laying on the bottom of the lake... Bacterial gas can be smelled through the water by these little ingenious creatures. :-)

Oh c'mon dead people are cool... and not nasty.. This book was awesome.. I hope one day people will begin to respect the human body as a masterpiece.. as it clearly is so intricate and well defined.. I think it is absolutly amazing that we have to power to recreate these perfect bodies over and over and over again.. simply astonishing :-)

Heres a silly side note... after my trip to the morgue .. I met unclenasty for lunch in the cafeteria. I ordered the only thing I ever eat... a turkey sandwhich.... I picked up the half and as I was about to bite into it... I got a whif of the smell of latex gloves on my hands.. the ones that I had on when I was cutting into human flesh.. which I then noticed was precisely the color of the turkey I was about to eat... needless to say I got up and got a salad.. it took a while to start eating turkey again..... but everytime I do... I give a cute lil chuckle.. and noone wlse knows why!!
